I had the pleasure of meeting Ed Smith AKA Maxamini back in the fall of 2003 just before the takeoff for RDR numero uno...but I initially got to know him on MINI2. He was one of the most upbeat people I've ever met and yet was also very sensitive to others needs and times of trouble. He also had one helluva tremendous sense of humor. ;D

Here's a link to Uptick's page in memory of Ed. I don't think he'll mind if I post it here because it was on NEMINI before as a link:http://homepage.mac.com/pwan/MAXAMINI/mainpage.html  I'm glad I had a chance to know him just a little and have the little pirate duck he sent me when I couldn't make the second Sunrise Run due to a recent operation. That duck is a happy remembrance of Ed AKA Maxmini for me.

It was one of the first things I thought about when the site went down...

The first RDR run was my first encounter with  Ed Smith.  A truly unforgettable character.

My son and I met Ed and Mart at RDR2.  This past August we were at MITM4 in Denver, and they started passing out little rubber duckies at the sponsors' dinner. We told everyone at our table about Ed and the ducks, and his untimely passing.  Little did we know that later in the evening they brought around the larger ducks that have been making the rounds at MINI events all across the country, and told Ed's story about MOT and make-a-wish.  It was kind of spooky that 6 years after I got my car and met Ed, he just keeps on showing up.

That's Awesome....sounds like you met Quack Quack Jack and Quack Quack Jill....the 2 big ducks...they have been traveling around the globe at all kinds of Mini events. I was lucky to take Quack Quack Jack to the top of Cadillac Mountain in Bar Harbor, ME back a few years ago.

Yes, Quack Quack Jack and Quack Quack Jill sound familiar.  ???

Alas, my beloved car is now 6 years old and my then "young son" (Ed encouraged me to bring him to NYC) is now going on 15 and wanting the JCW's keys ... I still use the "welcome" line that Ed and Mart greeted us with at the RDR2 gathering the nite before the drive:

"Remember, its a cult not a car."

Heh, I'm thinking of getting wheel covers for my steel winter wheels. The I started to wonder if I should spray some of them neon orange in memory of Ed. I know there's pictures floating around somewhere of his EB/W with neon orange wheel covers!

Must confess. I'm sure many of you know I've been pestering this board for a lil ducky. Many of you Miniacs have genenerously agreed to let me adopt one of yours, once again thank you. I just learned the history of MINI's and ducks. I never met Ed, aka MAXAMINI, Smith, but I've spent some time reading about him, and how he started the duck "thing". Wow what a great guy he must have been. The postings shout out volumes, I kinda of feel cheated I didn't have the opportunity to meet him. I just couldn't wait to meet up with you folks to adopt a ducky. I went to Toys R us at their opening this AM, and bought a bunch a duckies. I have 2 larger ones on my rear privacy shelf (Af & Lac), a medium sized one on my antenna (High Flyer), and a tiny wil one on my dash (lil ducky), and still have a bunch to hand out when I see a duckless MINI. I felt empowered today driving around with the ducks honoring the memory of Ed..

Here's a very good writeup of the history of Ed by Peter Wan (uptick). Includes Ed's first MINI rally and the history of the duck.

And the voicemail is just so Ed...

I have a duck or 2 for you... It's just nicer when given by a fellow miniac!  In the true MAXAMINI spirit of giving... I wanted our friends comming up from the south to learn about the "DUCK" thing and Ed's gift to fellow Miniacs. So I will be bringing them to the Statue of Liberty Meet on Sunday. If you are free just meet us there by the parking area on this map.

You can park in one of the free lots also marked on the map and walk over if you don't want to pay the $7.00 to park forthe day. We should be hanging out in the parking lot from 11:15 or so until 12:45pm when we are boarding the ferries to go the monuments.  ;)

sounds great. i was told about the meet earlier on NAM. liberty state park isn't far from me at all.

being that this is my first car im a little scared of those highways that i have to take to get there. still bucking and stalling a bit but i might be good by then. i have to take a long drive saturday anyways on some long highways anyways. so i may feel better about it come sunday morning.

ill for sure try to make it out.

just look for the long big curly hair and cut of jean shorts  :D
